First Trailer: "Dragon Quest: Your Story" brings the 90s game back to life through CG animation
Japanese distribution company Toho has released the first trailer for its upcoming cg animation feature Dragon Quest: Your Story to be released on August 2, 2019 in Japan.
The film is based on the 1992 game Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride originally released by Enix Corporation for the Super NES console. The game, re-released for PS2 in 2004 and for Nintendo DS in 2008, is the fifth installment in a popular series of Japanese role-playing games.
Dragon Quest Your Story is directed and written by Takashi Yamazaki (Stand by Me Doraemon, Always: Sunset on Third Street), with co-direction by Ryuichi Yagi and Makoto Hanafusa. Koichi Sugiyama is in charge of the music, which is fitting because he created the soundtrack for most games in the Dragon Quest series.
Yuji Horii, who served as writer and designer on the original Dragon Quest V game and who was involved in its subsequent remakes for new consoles, is supervising the movie's production on behalf of Square Enix.
The story follows the game series' protagonist, Ryuka, over a 30-year period, from his birth to when he marries and has a family of his own. Characters and monsters for the games were designed by Akira Toriyama, the creator of Dragon Ball.
A U.S. release date has not been announced at this time.
