"Emoji Movie" wins 4Razzies including Top Prize for Worst Movie of the year
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times - it's definitely true when it comes to contemporary feature animation. For all the amazing animated features being produced around the world nowadays, there's also films like The Emoji Movie.
The Sony Pictures Animation-produced film won four (dis)honors today at the 38th annual Razzie Awards, which recognize Hollywood's most awful achievements. Among its prizes, Emoji Movie won the event's top prize, the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Picture, marking the first (and hopefully last) time in Razzies history that an animated feature has won the award.
Its other wins were for worst director (Tony Leondis), worst screenplay (Tony Leondis, Eric Siegel, Mike White), and worst screen combo (any two obnoxious emojis).
If there's any positive takeaways from all of this, it's always worth remembering that even the worst animated films require skill and talent to produce, and The Emoji Movie had a lot of great people working on it. Many of the film's artists have their work featured in the online-only “art of” book for The Emoji Movie, which regardless of your feelings about the finished film, is worth taking a look at.
