20 animated Features Submitted for the 2014 Oscar

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences announced yesterday afternoon that 20 animated features have been submitted for Oscar consideration in the 2014 animated feature category. Since more than 16 films will be in contention this year, the Academy will select up to five nominees in the category.

The submitted films, in alphabetical order, are:

Big Hero 6The Book of LifeThe BoxtrollsCheatin'Giovanni's IslandHenry & MeThe Hero of Color CityHow to Train Your Dragon 2Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock HeartLegends of Oz: Dorothy's ReturnThe LEGO MovieMinuscule – Valley of the Lost AntsMr. Peabody & ShermanPenguins of MadagascarThe Pirate FairyPlanes: Fire & RescueRio 2Rocks in My PocketsSong of the SeaThe Tale of the Princess Kaguya

The Academy stated in their news release that several of the films have not yet had their required Los Angeles qualifying run, which means that some of these films could still drop off the list.

While there aren't any major surprises on the list-we'd already identified all the major contenders many months ago-it is surprising that some of the most well received animated features of 2014 weren't qualified for Oscar consideration. Some of the notable omissions are The Boy and the World, Tante Hilda, The Prophet, and Until Sbornia Do Us Part.

The nominations will be announced on January 15, 2015.
