Animafest Zagreb Announces 102 Short Films in Competition 2023

Animafest Zagreb, the second oldest animation film festival in the world, has announced the selection for its upcoming short film competition, which will take place June 5-10, 2023.

Approximately 1,800 films from 93 countries were submitted to this year's Animafest. Nearly 900 of them were submitted for the Grand Competition section, and 42 of them will be screened at the Festival. In addition, 830 student short films were submitted to the Student Film Competition, of which 41 were selected. The Croatian Film Competition will screen 19 animated short films this year.

The festival, which will be held in Zagreb in June, will also feature a number of familiar films: two of the 2023 Academy Award-nominated shorts, "Ice Merchants" by João Gonzalez and "The Flying" by Wendy Tilby and Amanda Forbis Sailor" will be screened in Competition. It's Nice in Here" by Robert-Jonathan Conyers and "The Debutante" by Elizabeth Hobbs have also been nominated for an Academy Award in the short film category.

Many of the filmmakers profiled in Cartoon Brew will be showing their films at this year's Animafest. Among them are Lucija Mrzljak's "Eeva," Florentina Gonzalez's "The World's After," Jun Wada's "Iki Monogatari: Turtle," Joseph Pierce's "Scale," and Stephen Irwin's World to Roam" directed by Stephen Irwin.
