'The Ice Merchant' and 'Passenger' Lead Ibero-American Quirino Award Nominations

The finalists for the 6th Iberoamerican Animation Quirino Awards, which will be held on May 13 in La Laguna, Tenerife, Canary Islands, have been announced.

The Oscar-nominated short film "Ice Merchants" by João Gonzalez and the short film "Passenger" by Juan Pablo Zaramella tied for the most nominations in four categories.

In this year's animated feature film category, Alberto Vazqueuz's "Unicorn Wars" is probably the most likely winner, but the competition is likely to be high. Nevertheless, "Nayola" was screened in Competition in Annecy and won awards in Guadalajara and São Paulo. Trunk Train: The Movie is a dark horse, as it was not screened at the festival, but it was well received by Brazilian critics and audiences.

In all, 21 features, shorts, commissioned films, and video games will compete in nine categories. Portugal, Argentina, and Spain top the list of most nominated countries with 10, 9, and 8 nominations respectively.

This year's jury includes Andrea Fernandez (Art Director, The Cuphead Show!) ), Julio Bonet (Adult Animation Manager, Netflix U.K.), Lisa Cohen (Film and Video Game Producer), Robert Jasztrowski (Producer and Director of GS Animation/Grupa Smacznego), Simon Wilches Castro (creative director of Titmouse Studios).
