Shudder Acquires Exclusive Streaming Rights to Phil Tippett's Stop-Motion Feature "Mad God"
AMC Network's horror streaming service Shudder has acquired the rights to the horror stop-motion feature "Mad God" by visual effects legend Phil Tippett.
Tippett, who provided VFX for such iconic films as "Star Wars," "Jurassic Park," "Robocop," and "Starship Troopers," began work on this personal feature in the 1980s, taking a break from his post-"Robocop 2" schedule. After several test shoots, he abandoned the project to concentrate on "Jurassic Park."
Decades later, Tippett was encouraged by studio artists to resume production on "Mad Gods. It took him another decade to complete the film with a volunteer crew of stop-motion trained employees; Mad God premiered at the Locarno Film Festival last year and has since been shown at the Edinburg, Fantasia, and Sitges Film Festivals.
The film will be available exclusively on Shudder beginning June 16, with a limited theatrical release planned.
"In short, Phil Tippett is a genius, and there is no better home for him and his visionaries than Shudder. We are proud to bring this enduring masterpiece to our members." [Regarding the deal, Tippett said, "It's been more than 30 years, but thanks to the team at Tippett Studios, we are finally realizing our dream. I am proud to partner with Shadar on the release of 'Mad Gods' and honored that my original vision can now be shared with audiences across the country."
Recent Tippett Studios projects include Disney+'s The Book of Boba Fett and The Mandalorian season 2, Netflix's Locke and Key season 2, and Marvel Studios' The Falcon and the Winter Soldier" for Marvel Studios.
