The "Hair Love" short film will be released in North America before "Angry Birds 2".
"Hair Love," an independent animated short acquired by Sony Pictures Animation earlier this year, will make its North American theatrical debut before "The Angry Birds Movie 2" hits theaters on August 14.
The film centers on the relationship between an African-American father, his daughter Zuri, and "the most difficult job a father can encounter - setting his daughter's hair." Based on an original story by former NFL player turned director Matthew A. Cherry, Cherry, Everett Downing, Jr. (animator, "Up," "WALL-E," "Brave"), and Bruce W. Smith (creator, "Proud Family," director, "Babe's Kids") Directed by.
Thanks to a 2017 Kickstarter campaign that raised $300,000, "Hair Love" built a strong support base early in production. This was the highest amount ever earned by a short film, animated or live-action, on the crowdfunding platform at the time.
"To see this project go from a Kickstarter campaign to the big screen is truly a dream come true," Cherry said in a press statement released Monday. I couldn't be more excited that 'Hair Love' will be co-starring with 'The Angry Birds Movie 2,' that it will be screened in front of a large audience, and that people around the world will see the inspiring story of a black father's attempt to find a way to wear his daughter's hair for the first time."
"Hair Love" features the voice of Issa Rae as the girl's mother. The short was produced by Karen Rupert Tolliver, Stacy Newton, Monica A. Young, Matthew A. Cherry, and David Steward II and Carl Reed of Lion Forge Animation. Peter Ramsey and Frank Abney are executive producers.
Co-executive producers of the short film include Jordan Peele, Andrew Hawkins, Harrison Barnes, and Yara and Keri Shahidi. Associate producers of shorts include N'Dambi Gillespie, Gabrielle Union-Wade & Dwayne Wade Jr.
The physical production of Hair Love was done at Six Point Harness, an LA-based animation studio.
