Kung Fu Panda 4" Surpasses $100 Million in Domestic Box Office in Second Weekend

DreamWorks Animation's "Kung Fu Panda 4" topped the domestic box office for the second weekend in a row, grossing an estimated $30 million in its second weekend, narrowly beating "Dune 2".

The latest "Kung Fu Panda" sequel, distributed by Universal, has grossed $107.7 million in its first two weeks of release and is expected to continue to do well in the absence of any notable competition for kids and families. The next big studio films targeting younger audiences are Paramount Pictures' "IF" on May 17 and Alcon Entertainment's "The Garfield Movie" on May 24. Disney will release "Luca" in theaters on March 22, but there is little confidence that "Luca" will draw an audience, having released "Soul" and "Turning Red" in theaters in January and February.

"Kung Fu Panda 4," co-directed by Mike Mitchell and Stephanie Ma Stein, became the first animated film to lead the domestic box office in consecutive years since "Super Mario Brothers Movie" last April. The film was also released by Universal, which has been the dominant animation distributor in U.S. movie theaters for the past several years.

It performed equally well overseas, grossing $69.6 million in 56 foreign markets. Although it was second only to "Dune 2" worldwide, the film was released in 74 territories. After two weeks, "Kung Fu Panda 4" grossed $176.5 million worldwide.

Another Universal release, Benjamin Renner's Migration, earned $580 in North America in its 13th weekend of release, taking in $126.5 million in that time. The Illumination-produced film has earned an additional $159.4 million overseas, bringing its worldwide gross to $295.9 million. This is a high amount for an original animated film these days, especially one with a budget of only $72 million.
