Animation and VFX nominations at the 74th Emmy Awards.

Nominations are out for the 74th Emmy Awards presented by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

The Best Animation Program category features three past winners: Bob's Burger, The Simpsons, Rick & Morty– two newcomers from the streaming side– Netflix Arcane and Disney+'s Marvel series What If...–

The Fortiche Production series based on Arcane, Riot Games and the legendary franchise is what you see in this category. Series derived from video games in this category are rare - in fact, esoteric may be the first, but the nomination is more than just a novelty. The esoteric high-quality cinematic approach to the series has won it a lot of fans, and the show has the momentum of awards heading to the Emmy Awards, which swept through all 3 categories nominated at the Annie Awards on May 9 last year.

Here is another factor that works in favor of both esoteric and in any case...The winner of last year's category was Genndy Tartakovsky's Primal, a departure from past comedy-oriented winners and perhaps a sign that emmy voters are beginning to embrace animation as a medium that can accommodate any type of storytelling.

Arkane even picked up nominations for sound editing in a half-hour comedy/drama series/animation. It's one of the 2 animated series in this category, 1 and the other 1 is Love, Death + Robot, and the live-action series Barry, Cobra Kai, Ted Lasso, and we have Shadow

notable animated nominations, usually in the non-animated category, and a hybrid channel of Disney+. It's up against a slate of live-action candidates: Ray Donovan: The movie, Reno 911.: Hunting for Canon, Survivor, and Zoe's special Christmas.
