May 2023, animation on Netflix, Disney+, Max, Hulu, etc.

With May just around the corner, it's time for our monthly anime streaming guide.

Netflix will add the most anime next month, most of it licensed content or new seasons of existing series. One exception is the new post-apocalyptic adult animated series "Mulligan," co-created by Robert Carlock and Sam Means.

On May 4, Disney+ will debut two new Star Wars animated series, Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures and the highly anticipated second season of Star Wars Visions. For the latter, Disney has tapped nine of the world's top independent animation studios to provide a look at a galaxy far, far away.

HBO Max has two exciting May debuts, Genndy Tartakovsky's Unicorn Warrior Eternal and Gremlins: The Secret of the Mogwai, until it turns into just Max on May 23.

Hulu has two new films in May: China's "Boonie Bears" and Spain's "Mo! China's "Boonie Bears: Back to Earth" and Spain's "Mummies."

Hulu has two new films in May: China's "Boonie Bears. The former was one of the most profitable animated franchises in China, while the latter earned more than $50 million worldwide despite a surprisingly small theatrical release in North America. For fans of Flor's animated classic, Hulu also distributes the 1982 Rankin/Bass cult favorite, The Last Unicorn.

A little about the list: while this list includes new season announcements for existing shows, it does not list new episode releases for existing seasons, as some streamers deliver new episodes in batches each month. Streaming distributors also often announce new animated releases mid-month. In this guide, we only catalog what streaming distributors announce at the beginning of the month, but whenever possible, we try to update the schedule when mid-month announcements are made. The list includes only content that will be released for the first time in the U.S. versions of these services.
