Digital Animation Fest "Supernova" to Hold Seventh Annual in Denver

Organized by the nonprofit Denver Digerati, the seventh annual Super Nova, titled "7th Dimension," will showcase digital animation and motion art at multiple theaters and public locations in Denver from September 1-30, 2022.

A key part of the event will be a nightly projection mapping projection on the facade of the Daniels & Fisher clock tower in downtown Denver. Eleven commissioned looped animations will be shown nightly. Featured artists include Gregory Bennett, Sandrine Demier, Dante Zavala, Liu, John Butler, Maita Gomez Molina, Darena Tran, Julio E. Berroa, and Yarou (also the subject of Supernova's Solo Artist Spotlight), Beetee Wolfe (guest curator and performer at the festival), and Esteban Azuela.

Described by Vice magazine as "an eccentric and visionary in the music world," Beetee Wolfe will curate six visual artists for "Silent Screen," Supernova's street-based event that focuses on "activating environmental awareness." Wolfe says the theme "asks what each of us can do in this time of climate crisis, when messages vital to protecting the planet are getting lost in the noise and onslaught of daily news, social media, and notifications created by the digital age." (see the link below). On September 17, from noon to 8 p.m., the selected artists will display their work created for one of six large LED screens in a six-block area of downtown Denver. The final list of artists will be announced soon.

Following "Silent Screen" on Saturday, September 17, the Buell Theater in the Arts Complex will host "Enter the Seventh Dimension," an immersive indoor multi-space event featuring Beetee Wolf, Greg Deal, and Vid Kids, Soul Tangler will perform live.

In addition to the outdoor festival and one-off events, Super Nova will screen over 200 short digital films. The short films will be organized into 12 programs (5 in-competition screenings and 7 out-of-competition) and will be available online in 3-day increments throughout September. Artists in competition will receive cash prizes totaling $5,000. For information on how to view the online screenings, please click here.

Along with the short films in Competition, Supernova will host the U.S. debut of independent CG filmmaker Xi Chen's Annecy and Ottawa selected feature film "Chicken of the Mound":

The jury for the Seventh Dimension "Supernova Focal Competition" includes artists John Butler (Ireland), Yaroo (Korea) and Frank Wang Ye Feng (China). The "Director's Choice" category and awards will be determined by Sharifa Moore, Executive Director of Denver Digerati, and founder Ivar Zile.
