2020 Academy Awards for Best Animated Short: Short List of Winners (Exclusive)

(UPDATE: We have updated the heading of this article to refer to these works as “possibly qualifying” rather than qualifying or submitting. All of these works technically qualify, but should be considered “may qualify” because they must be submitted to the Academy and meet the Academy's other rules before they can fully qualify. (See below for further explanation.)

According to Cartoon Brew, a record 92 animated short films have been submitted for the 2020 Academy Awards in the Animated Short Film category.

While the list of films is not publicly available, Cartoon Brew has compiled a list of films that it believes have been nominated for the category based on publicly available information and information submitted privately by filmmakers.

There are three ways to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Short:

Even if all of the films we have listed are technically eligible, it is up to the filmmakers to take the extra step of submitting their films for competition at the Academy Awards It is up to the filmmakers. Even if a film qualifies by winning an award or having a theatrical screening, it must still comply with all of the Academy's rules and regulations before it can be officially eligible. For these reasons, no one can be absolutely certain that all of these films will appear on the final list of qualifying films, but at this point, this is the closest thing to a complete list.

Primary voting by the Academy's shorts and animated feature members will take place in New York City on October 26 and 27, and in Los Angeles on November 9 and 10. Online voting for the shortlist will take place December 6-10; the 10-film shortlist will be announced on December 16.

Nominations for the 92nd Academy Awards will be announced on Monday, January 13, 2020, and the Academy Awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, February 9, 2020, at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood, California.
