Warner Bros. Discovery to Shut Down Classic Cartoon Streaming Platform Boomerang
Warner Bros. Discovery is ending its stand-alone classic anime streaming service, Boomerang. The last day of service will be September 30, 2024.
After that date, many of the cartoons currently available on the service, including Scooby-Doo, Looney Tunes, Tom and Jerry, The Flintstones, and Courage the Cowardly Dog, will be available on WBD's Max streaming platform.
The platform integration is not a complete surprise. The company launched its SVOD Boomerang app in 2017 before launching HBO Max (now rebranded Max) in 2020. After the launch of Max, which consolidated a wide range of entertainment into a single streaming destination, the idea of a separate platform just for vintage cartoons was a tough sell to consumers. The company has not released figures on the number of subscribers to its Boomerang service.
According to WBD, current Boomerang users will have their subscriptions automatically transferred to the ad-free version of Max, with no change in pricing "until further notice."
