Watch a teaser for Disney's unproduced “Haunted Mansion” series by “Kubo” creator Shannon Tindle

Over the weekend, “Kubo and the Two Strings” creator Shannon Tindle had a little fun on Twitter.

Unfortunately, the teaser was as far as the idea went, as Disney never moved forward with the idea:

The project was part of Tindle's overall development deal with Disney Television Animation (DTVA), a small group developed last year. Tindle wrote the pilot versions of two different versions of a possible animated haunted house series.

“My goal was to take inspiration from all the backstories created by the artists at WED (the name of Disney's Imagineering division) and turn them into one giant story,” Tindle told Cartoon Brew. The story will span several years and focus on different characters, but it will be one big, interconnected story.”

Tone-wise, the series “had a lot of fun and silly elements,” he explains, but they were contained within a larger storyline in which viewers enter the show through the eyes of a character struggling with grief over a recently lost loved one. I like to play with tones,” Tindle said, ”and animation (especially where ghosts are part of the DNA) is especially good at weaving together broad fun and deep emotional stories.”

At present, it seems unlikely that Disney will produce the project, but Tindle's teaser received a strong enthusiastic response after he posted it on Twitter. As for Tindle himself, his enthusiasm remains the same. I still want to jump back in and make this thing!”

Below are a couple of ghost designs Tindle created during the development of the project:
