69 invited to the Academy of Animation and VFX

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has invited 397 film professionals to become Academy members for 2022. Seventeen percent of them have been invited to the Academy's Short Film & Animated Feature and Visual Effects categories.

According to the Academy, membership selection is based on professional qualifications while prioritizing an ongoing commitment to representativeness, inclusion, and equity. 44% of the FY2022 membership is female, 37% belong to underrepresented ethnic/racial groups, and 50% are from 53 countries and regions outside the United States from 53 countries and regions outside of the United States.

However, there is one group conspicuously missing from this year's invitees to the Animation Competition: Asian filmmakers and animators.

For the past three years, nearly 25% of the animated feature films eligible for the Academy Awards have originated in Asia. While Asian animated films have been submitted to the Academy at a record pace over the past three years, no animated feature film from Asia has ever been nominated for an Academy Award.
