WATCH First Short from the “Warner Bros. Cartoonist Led” Looney Tunes Resurrection

Today in Annecy, France, Warner Bros. Animation premiered its new Looney Tunes shorts, screening more than a dozen in front of 1,000 enthusiastic festival attendees. The program was introduced by WBA Vice President of Series Audrey Diehl, who was joined by Executive Producer Pete Braungart and Supervising Producer Alex Kirwan, who discussed the process of making the new shorts between screenings.

Following the presentation, the short film “Dynamite Dance,” directed by David Gemmill, was posted online:

The short is part of the studio's commitment to produce 1,000 minutes of new Looney Tunes animation. When WB announced the project at last year's Annecy Film Festival, the studio advertised that the short would “take a cartoonist-driven approach to storytelling,” and from what is being shown today, that mission is being faithfully followed.

Indeed, the cartoons screened today were quite different from recent Looney Tunes television projects. The characters were true to their personalities, the animation was visual, reflecting the unique humor of each director and board artist, and the gags were original, outrageous, and in some cases so outrageous that one wonders how they pulled it off in 2019

Screenings One of the shorts that received the strongest response at the “Gemmill” was “Basket Bugs”, also directed by Gemmill. As anyone who has seen many animated shorts in theaters will know, it is rare to hear a cheer for an individual gag during the course of a film.

Warner Bros. has yet to announce how it will release the new Looney Tunes content - when all is said and done, there could be as many as 200 or more shorts of varying lengths - but wherever it is released, many viewers will find this one-of-a-kind project Wherever it is released, many viewers will be pleasantly surprised by this one-of-a-kind project.
