Warner Bros. is producing an animated feature film of “Emily the Strange”

Warner Bros. Film Animation and Bad Robot, led by J.J. Abrams, will bring the goth merchandising icon Emily the Strange to theatrical animation.

First introduced as a skateboard graphic in the early 1990s, the character became a popular product used on clothing, stationery, and fashion accessories. Emily has also appeared in graphic novels, comics, and other media.

Here's what we know about the project:

Both the creative and executive teams that prepared for the film were fantastic. Everyone understands and respects the unique connection Strange's Emily has to our “real world” and has a keen perspective. Emily celebrates all that is strange and different and, as a result, makes the strange and different in all of us feel less alone. To bring Emily's universe and the many myths we have created over the years to life is truly to realize Emily's greatest nightmare.

I am so excited to be a part of the team bringing Emily her first feature film! The partnership between Bad Robot and Warner Bros. Film Animation will truly take Emily soaring into the sky. I have always been drawn to Emily's risk-taking, genre-bending attitude and style. I mean, brains and bangs, who could be cooler. This piece is going to be a lot of fun.

Emily is a timeless pop culture icon of individuality and empowerment, and Pamela Ribbon has a unique and iconic voice. What an honor it is to bring “Emily the Strange” to the big screen as Warner Bros. Film Animation, teaming up with Bad Robot, Rob (Leger) and Trevor (Duke-Moretz).

With Bad Robot, we are pushing the boundaries of what is possible in animation. Emily, a character who refuses to be defined by others, is a perfect opportunity to do just that. We are excited to add her world to our feature animation slate. The team assembled is very passionate about Emily the Strange, what she has represented so far, and what she means to future generations.
