2019 Emmy Nominations: 'Bojack Horseman' Joins Animated Program Awards Race

Nominations were announced this week for the 71st Primetime Emmy Awards presented by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

In the animated program category, "Bob's Burgers" and "The Simpsons" will face off against "Bojack Horseman," "Big Mouth," and "Adventure Time," which have never been nominated for the same award. The Simpsons, which has won 33 Emmy Awards to date, is also in the running for Best Character Voice Actor (Hank Azaria).

As with animated programming, the animated short category tends to repeat itself from year to year. Cartoon Network's "Teen Titans Go! and "Steven Universe" have been nominated every year since 2017 and 2015, respectively, and are back again this year. The network's sister company, Adult Swim, received its only nomination for "Robot Chicken. The same goes for Nickelodeon for "SpongeBob". The final nominee is "The Witness," part of Netflix's anthology Love, Death & Robots.

Netflix has been nominated for more awards this year than any other network except HBO. Not surprisingly, it has at least one nomination in all but one animation-related category. Last year, no films were nominated in either the Best Animated Program or Best Animated Short Film categories, while this year three films were nominated.

In total, Netflix received 117 nominations in all categories (a company record) compared to HBO's 137 nominations (also a record). Subtract "Game of Thrones," which won't be around next year, and Netflix tops the list; by 2020, the SVOD giant may overtake the cable network. Either way, the two are well ahead of the competition; the third highest number of nominations is NBC's 58.

Now it's up to the Television Academy's 24,000+ voters to see the nominees and vote online (deadline is August 29). The Creative Arts Emmys will be announced on September 21, with the other awards the following day. The awards ceremony will be broadcast on FOX.
