Steven Universe" is First Animated Program to Win GLAAD Kids & Family Award

Last night, Cartoon Network's Steven Universe made history by becoming the first animated series to win the award for Outstanding Kids & Family Program at the GLAAD Media Awards, which honor fair, accurate and inclusive LGBTQ representation in media.

Introduced for the first time in 2018, the category saw multiple animated series nominated in both years. Since the first winner was Disney Channel's live-action series "Andy Mac," "Steven Universe" became the second winner in the category and the first animated series ever to win. The series is also the first show in Cartoon Network's lineup to win a GLAAD Media Award in any category.

Other nominees in the category include "Adventure Time" (Cartoon Network), "Andy Mac" (Disney Channel), "Anne with an E" (Netflix), and "She-Ra and the Princesses of Power" ( (Netflix).

Steven Universe, produced by Cartoon Network Studios, concluded its fifth season in January. Among the show's GLAAD-worthy achievements was a story arc titled "Heart of the Crystal Gems," which aired last summer, in which Stephen officiated the wedding of non-binary characters Ruby and Sapphire.

Steven Universe creator Rebecca Sugar posted a photo of the trophy on her Instagram account to express her gratitude for the honor.

Steven Universe won the GLAAD award tonight... This is incredible... We are the first animated show in history to win this award... I am so grateful and honored #GLAADawards
