Annecy Announces Three More Divisions: Graduation Ceremony, Television, Commissioned Work

For its 2019 edition, which will take place from June 10 to 15, the Annecy International Animation Festival has announced the films selected for competition in the Graduation Productions, Television, and Commissioned Productions categories.

The Graduation Productions category includes 48 films focusing on the graduation projects of animation students from around the world. Commenting on the competition, Annecy's artistic director, Marcel Jean, said: "Issues of identity (including gender identity) have surfaced and several young filmmakers have become obsessed. This year, we noticed many strong aesthetic proposals and technically experimental films." He also confirmed that 62.5% of the selected films were directed or co-directed by women.

In addition, 24 films were selected for the television film category, which consisted primarily of outstanding episodes from episodic programs. Gene says that the group of films selected "reflects the incredible diversity of contemporary programming production. The idea of diverse platforms and an increasing number of channels has led to the selection of more daring and niche works." Jean notes that less than one-third of the films selected are directed or co-directed by women.

The consignment category includes commercials, music videos, tourism marketing campaigns, and issue-based content. Of the 35 projects entered in the commissioned category, 43% were directed or co-directed by women.

A total of 3,092 films from 86 countries were submitted to the Annecy International Film Festival. The countries with the most entries were the United States, France, and the United Kingdom. The festival announced its selections for the Short Films, Off-Limits, Perspectives Competition, and Young Audiences sections.

The list of feature films in Competition will be announced at a press conference in Paris on April 15.
