See the First Look at Lisa Hanawalt's Netflix Series "Tuca & Bertie"

Netflix has released a new teaser featuring footage from the upcoming animated adult series Tuca & Bertie. The teaser includes behind-the-scenes interviews with the show's creator, Lisa Hanawalt, and co-stars Tiffany Haddish and Ali Wong.

The comedic performers play two 30-year-old bird ladies whose friendship is filled with romantic mishaps and candid conversations about womanhood. Haddish is the sassy, free-spirited toucan, and Wong is Bertie, the anxious, fanciful songbird. Other cast members include series regular Steven Yorn and guest stars Nicole Byers, Richard E. Grant, John Early, Reggie Watts, Tig Notaro, Amber Ruffin, Jermaine Fowler, and Tessa Thompson.

In the clip, the two comedians discuss how they understand the personalities of their characters and share details of their collaboration with Hanavolt. They also discuss how they got the recording sessions off the ground and how they understood the message of female empowerment. Hanawalt says the impetus for the show was to fill a void in the animation industry regarding stories told by women about adult issues. [Hanawalt, who is also the production designer for "BoJack Horseman," is the co-creator of "BoJack" with Raphael Bob-Waksberg, Noel Bright ("Bojack Horseman," "Friends"), Steven A. Cohen ("The Bojack Horseman," "Jack & Bobby"), along with Haddish as executive producers. Michael Eisner's Tornante Company is producing the series, with animation by Shadow Machine. (Both companies also produced Bojack for Netflix.)

Tuca & Bertie debuts on Netflix on May 3, 2019.
