Production I.G to Produce New Season of "FLCL" at Adult Swim
Adult Swim has announced that it will produce a sequel to "FLCL," a six-episode anime series that breaks the rules and is graphically innovative. The new episodes will be produced by Production I.G., a Japanese studio that acquired the rights to the series from Gainax last fall.
Production I.G will produce two new six-episode seasons under the supervision of FLCL series creator Kazuya Tsurumaki. The new series will be directed by Katsuyuki Motohiro ("Psycho-Pass"), with character design by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto ("Neon Genesis Evangelion") and a script by Hideto Iwai ("Last Dinner").
"The original FLCL is a classic anime and has been a fixture at Adult Swim since we first saw it," said Jason DeMarco, senior vice president and creative director of Adult Swim On-Air.

The original FLCL told the story of 12-year-old Naota Nantaba, whose life is turned upside down after he is run over by a strange Vespa-riding girl, Haruko Haruhara; according to an Adult Swim press release, the new series takes place many years after the original series ended:
while the war between the two organizations known as Medical Mechanica and Fraternity rages across the galaxy. One day, a new teacher named Haruko arrives at school, a teenage girl named Hidomi, who thought there was nothing surprising about her ordinary life. Soon, Medical Mechanika attacks her town, and in Hidomi, she discovers a secret that only Haruko can unravel, a secret that will save everyone. [Production I.G, founded in 1987, is known for the "Ghost in the Shell" series directed by Mamoru Oshii, the TV series "Psycho-Pass" and "Shinkoku no Kyojin. FLCL's new series is scheduled to premiere on Adult Swim's Toonami block in late 2017 or early 2018.
