Craig McCracken confirms completion of "Wonder Over Yonder"

Disney XD will end "Wonder Over Yonder" after two seasons, the show's creator Craig McCracken posted on Tumblr.

McCracken had hoped to produce a third season of his intergalactic comedy fantasy series. "About a year ago, we presented a pitch for a season three arc that promised to bring our characters together in new, unexpected, and hilarious ways," he wrote yesterday. 'And just as S2 evolved from S1, we had a really exciting approach to take S3 even further. We had plans for new characters, reintroductions of old characters, and even a little backstory!"

According to McCracken, this decision was made by "Disney's boss's boss's boss's boss," and they offered no specific reason why they did not want a third season. McCracken noted that the decision to terminate the show had nothing to do with the ratings for season two, but with the fact that they were told before the second season premiered that the show would not be renewed.

In another recent Tumblr post, McCracken expressed frustration with the lack of a more complex, sequential storyline in Wonder, like Adventure Time and Gravity Falls. He said that Disney executives insisted on stand-alone shorts "for repeats, for ratings, and for the 24-hour animation channel," which "has been the case since I started making animation in the early 90s."

A compromise was eventually reached in Season 2, he said, which added an element of continuity to the program. Still, McCracken admits that the series is "not as extremely complex and serious as some people would like."

Wander Over Yonder won the Annie Award for best animated children's television production last month. The remaining seven new episodes will air through the end of June.

As for McCracken's future plans, he wrote on Twitter earlier this evening that he is developing a new series. Under the current deal with Disney, the studio will be the first to see the idea.
