Annecy Announces 71 Short Films to be Screened in this Year's Official Section

Annecy, the world's longest-running animation film festival, has announced the 71 short films that will be screened in the official sections of this year's festival, which runs from June 11 to 17.

Annecy received more than 3,200 submissions this year from nearly 100 countries and regions. Producers from 41 countries are represented in the 71 short films selected this year. Notably, for the first time in Annecy's history, more than half of the films were directed or co-directed by women, a number that has increased every year since 2018, the festival said. Twelve of this year's picks are debut films.

Annecy's Official Selection of Short Films is divided into four categories. 37 films in the Official Short Films category, 7 in the Off-Limits category, 19 in the Perspectives category, and 8 in the Young Audience category.

Two of the directors participating this year have already won Cristal for their short films, Nienke Deutz in 2018 for "Bloomstreet 11" and Frank Dion in 2016 for "The Head Vanishes"; in 2007, T.O. Tom C.J. Brown of T.M., Jenny Jokela of Barbeque in 2018, and Daria Kashcheeva of Dcera in 2019 received Cristal for their graduation work.

Annecy's artistic director, Marcel Jean, said of this year's lineup: "Annecy 2023's short film selection stands out because many of the films deal with women's issues, especially those related to motherhood. Compared to recent festivals, these films are more ambitious in their storytelling, with an emphasis on humor"

The festival will announce its lineup of graduation, television, and commissioned films at the end of the month, and will announce its feature film selection at the end of April.
