Guillermo del Toro's "Pinocchio" and "Avatar: The Way of Water" win BAFTA awards for animation and VFX

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts' annual BAFTA Awards took place over the weekend, with three awards for Best Animated Film, Best Special Visual Effects and Best British Animated Short.

Which nominated Awards favorite, Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio, once again came out on top at the BAFTAs, winning the award for Best Animated Film. It was also nominated for Original Score and Production Design, but these awards went to composer Volker Bertelmann for "Western Front Variations" and Florencia Martin and Anthony Carlino for "Babylon," respectively.

"Pinocchio" was directed by del Toro and Mark Gustafson from a script by del Toro and Patrick McHale. It was Double Dare You, in association with The Jim Henson Company! (Double Dare You!) and a Netflix presentation produced by Shadowmachine.

This year's BAFTA for Best British Animated Short went to Peter Byington and Charlie Mackesy's The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse, produced by Carla Speller, Hannah Minghella and Matthew Freud, along with J.J. The film is also nominated for an upcoming Academy Award and will be a strong contender, especially after winning a BAFTA. It is currently streaming on Apple TV+.

James Cameron's sci-fi sequel Avatar: The Way of Water won the BAFTA for Best Special Visual Effects, and WetaFX was awarded the V.I.P. award for the film, produced by TSG Entertainment and Lightstorm Entertainment and distributed by 20th Century Studios was the VFX studio for the film, which was produced by TSG Entertainment and Lightstorm Entertainment and distributed by 20th Century Studios.
