Netflix Announces Three Animation Projects by Asian-American Creators

Netflix has announced a film and two series by Asian-American and Asian-American creators, producers, and actors. Both are scheduled for release in 2023.

Jane Lee, manager of Netflix Animation, announced these projects on her blog. But I have always had a passion for animation. And now I can reclaim that place for myself and for others who deserve to see themselves on the screen."

This action comedy film draws inspiration from the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, which has inspired countless animated films in China and elsewhere. The legendary monkey battles gods, demons, dragons, and his own arrogance. The voices are all Asian.

Fifty years from now, a lowly janitor makes his dream come true. Fifty years from now, a lowly janitor fulfills his dream: to pilot Robomech, a giant robot from outer space, and protect the Earth from aliens. The action series is published by Boom! Studios in Los Angeles, with CG animation by Tokyo-based Polygon Pictures, creators of such films as "Tron: Uprising" and "Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence."

First-time creator Hasrajani mined South Asian mythology to create a 2D comedy action series set in the magical land of Maya. Baan, a warrior made of ghee, and Rani, a young thief with delusions of grandeur, fight to defend their territory against Raj and his army of monsters.
