'Blue Eye Samurai,' 'Scavengers Reign,' 'X-Men '97' Among 2024 Emmy Animation Nominees

Nominations were announced today for the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards presented by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

In the main category we are following, “Outstanding Animated Program,” two longtime Fox contenders (“The Simpsons” and “Bob's Burgers”) and three new streaming series (“Blue Eye Samurai,” “Scavengers Reign, X-Men '97) are nominated. Among the new shows, Netflix's excellent “Blue Eye Samurai” is one to watch. The series won six Annie Awards earlier this year, the series' highest award, and was also nominated for a Peabody Award.

Not to be missed is the sci-fi drama “Scavengers Reign,” which aired on Max. The series was dropped by the streaming company after its first season, but Netflix saw something in it and acquired the streaming rights to the first season. The Emmy nomination (and win) will no doubt influence Netflix's decision to order a second season, but for now, the show remains in limbo: “X-Men '97,” a revival of the 90s-era “X-Men: The Animated Series.” Production has already begun on the second season. The premiere episode garnered 4 million views on Disney+ in its first five days, giving it the most views on the platform since 2021's “What If...? - the most-watched animated feature-length series premiere on the platform since “What If...?

“BLUE EYE SAMURAI” was nominated for the second time in the Comedy Drama Series and Animation Sound Editing categories. It is the only animated film in the category.

The Character Voice Acting category is filled with familiar voices: Hank Azaria of “The Simpsons” (his tenth nomination in the category and four previous wins), Maya Rudolph of “Big Mouth” (her fifth nomination in the category and three previous wins), “Family Guy Alex Borstein (sixth nomination in the category and one previous win). Sterling K. Brown, a multiple Emmy winner in other categories, received his first nomination in the category for Prime Video's “Invincible,” and Emmy winner Hannah Wadham also received her first nomination in the category for FOX's “Krapopolis.”

The Short Animated Program Emmy Awards, which were not announced last year, are no longer officially an award. The Television Academy announced that due to a drop in submissions, the category has been merged with the Animated Program category, with “two tracks: short programs (2-20 minutes) and other programs (over 20 minutes).”

The 76th Annual Emmy Awards will be presented on Sunday, September 15, while the Creative Arts Emmy Awards will be held on Saturday, September 7 and Sunday, September 8.
