Bob Spitt,” ‘Frankelda,’ and ‘Bestia’ Top the 2022 Quirino Awards

Stop Motion won the grand prize at the 5th Ibero-American Animation Quirino Awards, held on the Spanish Canary Islands island of Tenerife. The award recognizes the best work in Spanish, Portuguese, and Latin American animation from the previous year.

This year's ceremony was a weekend of big awards, but few surprises.

Cesar Cabral's “Bob Spit - We Do Not Like People” won Best Feature Film and Best Sound Design/Original Music. The stop-motion film follows legendary Brazilian comic book character Bob Spit as he races through a post-apocalyptic desert populated by mutantized '80s pop stars. But the film is also a tribute to Angeli, one of the greatest cartoonists in Brazilian history and creator of Bob Spit. The film premiered last year in Annecy's Contrôle Champion Competition, where it won an award, and was produced by Coala Filmes and Cup Filmes.

In the Series category, Frankelda's Book of Spooks won two awards for series and animation design. Created by brothers Arturo and Roy Ambris Rendon, the series was produced by Cinema Fantasma for HBO Max and Cartoon Network. Set in a haunted mansion, the series literally features ghost writer Frankelda, who tells viewers a spooky story each week.

Also, perhaps the most notable Ibero-American film of the year, Hugo Covarrubias' Oscar-nominated short “Bestia” won Best Short Film and Best Visual Development, produced by Trébol 3 Producciones and Maleza Estudio The film is based on the true story of a female torturer who worked for the Chilean Intelligence Service (DINA) during Pinochet's brutal Chilean dictatorship. Over the past year, the film has won a number of high-profile awards, including the Annecy International Film Festival's Connection Award, the Annie Award for Best Animated Short Film, and the SXSW Grand Jury Prize.

Other Quirino Award winners this year: Mauro Luis López's “Flies Only Live One Day” won in the Student Film Competition, and Navegante Entertainment's Greak: Memories of Azul,” directed by Navegante Entertainment, was selected in the Video Games and Animation category. Bernardita Ojeda and Cristian Freire's #binarygendernorm: Girls was named best commissioned film of the year.

This year's jury included Sebastian Debertin (Kika, Germany), Magdiela Hermida Duhamel (LatinX in Animation, USA), Zofia Jaroszuk (Animoon, Poland), Kenneth Ladekjær (Sun Creature Studio, Denmark), and Hernán La Greca (Creative Director and Content Developer, USA).
